I keep getting very painful of what I call cramp in my toes. When I say painful I mean painful. My toes move, it happened again yesterday, there I was sitting on the settee, gritting my teeth, moaning, husband asked what was the matter, I just said look at my toes.

Is this RA or just cramp? Does it happen to others? Sometimes one toe goes under the other making it stick up, sometimes they just move to one side. My husband did ask yesterday.....What would you do if the happened while you are driving?

I'm sure I have read something simular along time ago about toes.

OOOch Paula I can sympathise. My ankles started doing the same thing at night, they would just curl up inwards and be excruciatingly painful.
My GP prescribed Quinnine tablets and it stopped it completely. Might be worth a try?

Oh golly, Paula - this is HORRID and yes, it happens to me too. I know Jenni has it as well. She says it's when her toes do the "Hitler" salute!! When this hapens to me, I get Steve to pull my toes and (OK it hurts like hell) but it certainly helps.

Love Jeanxxxx

PS I'm on Hydrowhatsit, Julie, but it hasn't stopped mine? Mind you, I always was odd, wasn't I?RollEyes Blink

Hi

I have heard that it is to do with the changes in the foot in response to chronic inflammation- fallen arches etc. some people say to have a glass of tonic water (For hydration and quinine) other people say its to do with potassium so have a square of chocolate, a banana etc.

I have found this technique helpful

Take a spoon to bed with you, but keep it out where it will be room temperature. When you get a cramp, place the bowl of the spoon against the affected area. The metal of the spoon will quickly extract heat from the body. This will work if your cramp is in your ankle, calf, or toe.

Please take care if trying quinine, it interacts with some drugs, can't remember which right now, but I know I can't have it. I think it might be the drugs for high blood pressure, will try and find out.

Lyn

PS - have just looked on the web for info, couldn't find much apart from it makes tinnitus worse. Maybe that's what I was thinking of.

Thank you all for your quick response.

Interesting what Jenni said about fallen arches, have been told mine have. Think I will try the chocolate, a bar might just do the trick.

I am to see my nurse soon (first appointment after starting MTX). It will be on my list to ask her. It's happened a few times with my thumb, it moved right under the palm of my hand. Not so painful but the concentration I had to have to move my thumb back into place was unbelievable.

Driving.......well I've now got a good excuse to sit back and let him to do it!!!!!

Hi Carol,

With me it is the big toe. It always happens in the middle of the night. I can feel, it is twisting and definitely moving. OUCH!!! It really hurts. My husband also suffers from cramps in his legs at night. With him, I think it is his diabetes.

The only thing, that helps me is getting out of bed a.s.a.p and stamp my foot. I am on hydrx...., which is quinine. Maybe it is helping me a bit, as I don`t seem to have had it for a little while.

Merete

Hi Paula,

I get exactly the same thing! But speaking of driving ... I've found I get it more commonly if I've been doing a lot of driving or at least more than normal. I don't know what causes it but it's bl**dy sore and I sympathise wholeheartedly x x x
